The Shire Reeve's Tale: 17

Today, I welcomed,as High Sheriff , the Applied Recomputing Symposium to Belfast and said:

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and gentlemen,

Can I extend my warmest welcome to many international visitors to Belfast. It is remarkable that a highly technical conference like the Applied Reconfigurable Computing symposium comes to Belfast. I am pleased that our researchers from Queen’s University have brought this important international event to our City.

Belfast has had a long association with technology through innovations in the 1800s in ship building and linen and more recently software. We host a number of important software companies such as Microsoft, SAP, Accenture, Liberty IT, Citigroup and NYSE EuroNext.

Indeed some of these companies, SAP and NYSE EuroNext are closely involved with both universities in Northern Ireland looking at reconfigurable computing solutions for their existing and future products.

I know the symposium has previously been to Portugal, The Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, Thailand and now Belfast. The conference has attracted many researchers from around the world including US, Germany, Japan and Brazil to name but a few. I understand that with the proliferation of computing everywhere, that reconfigurable computing is becoming a very hot topic.

As well as the technical program, I hope you are able to explore the cultural experience that Belfast holds and visit many of the attractions we have to offer.

Belfast is home to the Titanic and considerable developments have been made in the Titanic quarter to reflect this. The site is well worth a visit just to give some idea of the dimensions of the technology at that time. The Titanic and her sister ship the Olympic were the Starship Enterprises of their day

There is also the most famous bar in Belfast, the Crown Bar (a National Trust Property) with its famous mosaic tiles and stained glass windows. We have indeed a long tradition of Whiskey distillation here, represented by the famous Old Bushmills Whiskey.

It just remains for me to officially open this symposium and wish you the best in your endeavours over the next 3 days. In welcoming you, may I say a special thanks to the Representatives from Japan, who have taken so much trouble to come here.
